vSphere Replication Calculator

info-circle-line

Complete the input below to estimate average recovery point objective (RPO), Network bandwidth requirements, or number of virtual machines that can be replicated.

Average replicated MB per VM per day

1549

Recommended maximum number of replicated VMs

300

Recommended Minimum Megabits per second (Mbps) Throughput

Recommended Lowest Average RPO (minutes)

vSphere Replication 8.5 supports replicating a maximum of 500 VMs with an RPO of 5 mins. Earlier versions of vSphere Replication only supported replicating a maximum of 50 VMs with an RPO of 5 mins.

Are you trying to solve for network bandwidth, RPO, or number of VMs?

Select what you are trying to solve for in this analysis.

Total number of VMs in your environment to be replicated

Value must be between 1 and 3000

Enter the total number of virtual machines in your environment to be replicated (default 200, minimum 1, maximum 3000).

Average number of virtual disks per VM

Default 1, must be 1 or greater

Average number of virtual disks (.vmdk files) attached to each virtual machine (default 1, minimum 1).

Average size of virtual disks (GB)

default 72, minimum 1

Enter the average virtual disk (.vmdk) size in GB (default 72, minimum 1).

Average capacity utilization of virtual disks (percent)

Default 70%, must be 1-100%

Average utilization of virtual disks in the environment. For example, if the average percentage of free space on each virtual disk is 30%, average utilization = 70% (default 70%, must be 1-100%).

Total data to be replicated (GB)

Is replication compression enabled for VMs?

Select yes if replication compression is enabled for VMs.

Average daily data change rate (percent)

Default 3%, must be 1-100%

Average percentage of data that changes in each virtual machine (default 3, must be 1-100%).

Largest data change burst (percent)

Default 25%, must be 1-100%

Largest percentage of changed data that changes in a short amount of time. For example, a virtual machine with 100GB of data has a daily change rate of 5% = 5GB. However, 1.25GB occurs at one time = 25% burst. This is factored into vSphere Replication's ability to meet the RPO at any point during the day (default 25%, must be 1-100%).

Amount of changed data per day (GB)

302.4

Average available network bandwidth for replication (Mbps)

Empty Field

Average available bandwidth on the WAN link. For example, a 45Mbps link 60% utilized = 18Mbps of available bandwidth.

Average recovery point objective (RPO) (minutes)

Default 240, must be 5 to 1440

Average RPO across all replicated virtual machines. For example, 100 virtual machines with a 120-minute RPO and 100 virtual machines with a 360-minute RPO would have an average RPO of 240 minutes (Default 240, must be 5 to 1440).
